I did not realize how long ago Pensacola Beach was founded until I conducted a bit of research on this historic cross. I wonder if white sand existed when the European settlement was first established here.
Native American tribes reached this area thousands of years before the Spanish. But, what is really cool is the region initially was named Panzacola after the first native American tribe to have settled at Pensacola bay. This historic cross was built in 1559 to signify the first European settlement, which also happens to be the first European settlement in the continental United States.
This cross is a huge landmark in Pensacola Beach and Pensacola. Today, it is perched up on a hill that you have to hike up to reach. I ended up capturing this cross for a project I was producing with a local coffee shop. It is really tough capturing this cross with the beach in the background because there are a ton of brush and thorny bushes on the north side of the cross.
I ended up getting injured during this project. I ran into some thorns. But I did what I needed to do to get what I wanted. The moon’s natural light also helped round out this scene.
