Should the trip be leisurely, and not of great length,and some additional weight not objectionable, the writer wouldadvise the use of plates. On the contrary, should the touristbe making a lengthy trip, and object to weight, he should takea supply of films. An ample supply of plates or films shouldbe taken along, so that it would not be necessary to limit thenumber of exposures, shotdd the tourist visit a locality rich insubjects for his camera. The light varies greatly in different localities, making it im-possible for the tourist to decide on the correct time for_everyexposure, but it is advisable to give a liberal exposure when-ever possible. There will be many occasions when a photo-graph of a beautiful scene, or some point of interest, is de-sired, and the light or other conditions are not favorable. Thenit is better to make an exposure and try to bring the image out 172

MORNING SUNSHINE. Frank £. Huson. in the dark room. You may succeed in getting a negative ofthe coveted scene. If not successful you will have made aneffort at least. No attempt should be made to photograph a scene from amoving train, except from the platform of the rear car, andthen only when the train is moving slowly. Exposures fromsteamboats are rarely satisfactory, as the distance from theobject on the shore is usually too great. The shutter shouldbe operated at high speed when on the water, owing to thegreat reflection. The same advice applies to photographingwater-falls, while views of heavy trees, dark buildings orcanyons require a liberal exposure. The tourist will havemany opportunities to include figures in his landscape views,as the ever-present intruder will be eager to pose, but it isbetter to make the landscape, then carefully pose the personor crowd and make a group. It is not necessary to use a platefor this, as the same feeling of satisfaction is felt if you smi-ply
